How to Calculate Your Exact Age

What β€œexact age” really means

Your exact age is more than just the number of birthdays you’ve had. It’s the precise amount of time between the day you were born and today β€” expressed in years, months and days, and if you like, right down to hours, minutes and seconds.

The simple method

To work out age by hand, you compare three parts of the date in order:

  • Years: Subtract your birth year from the current year.
  • Months: Adjust if the current month is earlier than your birth month.
  • Days: Borrow from the previous month if today’s date is earlier than your birth day.

For example, someone born on 15 March 2000, measured on 6 July 2026, is 26 years, 3 months and 21 days old.

Why manual math often goes wrong

Two things trip people up: months have different lengths (28 to 31 days), and leap years add an extra day every four years. Forget either one and your total can be off by days β€” or even a whole year near a birthday.

The easy way

Rather than borrowing days and tracking leap years yourself, let a calculator handle it. Enter your date of birth and it instantly returns your exact age plus your total days, weeks and hours lived β€” with every calendar rule applied automatically.
